ith an abundance of lush jungles, enchanting lagoons, Mayan archaeological sites and the inevitable guest appearance of an iguana or two, playing golf at one of the Mexican Caribbean’s 14 world-class golf courses — seven located in Cancun and seven in Riviera Maya (situated along Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum) — is an experience like no other. Throw in stunning views of the region’s deeply hued turquoise water and we predict your go-to home course will have a lot of explaining to do.

El Camaleón Mayakoba (Above)

There are plenty of good reasons Riviera Maya’s El Camaleón Mayakoba was designated the first PGA Tour golf course in Latin America. Designed by Greg Norman, the 18-hole course offers a lot of the aforementioned regional attributes (think tropical jungle, dense mangroves and freshwater canals) as well as two oceanfront holes. While a big hit with the pros — the course does host the WWT Championship at Mayakoba — all levels of golfers are accommodated with five tee marks at each hole offering distance options. This course is also located just a short distance from Playa del Carmen, known as “the heart of the Riviera Maya” with amazing shopping malls, night clubs, beautiful beaches, amusement parks, cenotes, caverns, and underwater rivers.

PGA Riviera Maya by Bahía Príncipe Golf

Located 15 miles from Tulum, PGA Riviera Maya appeals to a variety of golfers with its 18- and 9-hole courses. Recognized by Golf Digest to be among the best golf courses in Mexico and the Americas, the Robert Trent Jones II-designed courses were cut deep into a limestone quarry so that their fairways emerged from the natural wonders of the area, creating a harmonious design of nature and man. Golf pros here embrace the Golf Natural Guidance method, which helps students develop an effective, healthy and lasting swing.

Iberostar Playa Paraíso Golf Club

With an elegant beachfront hotel at its beck and call, Riviera Maya’s Iberostar Playa Paraíso Golf Club, located within the Iberostar Paraiso complex, is an 18-hole golf course designed by P.B. Dye and surrounded by lush jungle vegetation rises to its surroundings. And we’re not the only ones who think so; the club has hosted numerous prestigious events such as the World Amateur Team Championships 2016 and Big Break Mexico.

Hard Rock Golf Club Riviera Maya

Located less than an hour’s drive to the south of Cancun, Hard Rock Golf Club Riviera Maya is an 18-hole course built among the lush foliage of the Mayan jungle, combining beauty and challenge seamlessly. Designed by Robert Von Hagge, it’s considered one of the first courses of the modern era. A first-class practice area, complete with a driving range, as well as a large putting green (chipping, pitching and greenside bunker areas) are some of the amenities here.

Playa Mujeres Golf Club

Set within 930 tropical acres of Playa Mujeres Complex, Playa Mujeres Golf Club sits between the Caribbean Sea and the Chacmuchuch Lagoon. Carefully crafted water holes, jungles, bunkers and greens are all part of this Greg Norman signature 18-hole ecologically friendly championship course. Several of the holes offer spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea and Isla Mujeres, the island that sits right infront of Cancunscoast. The white sandy beaches and traps are a visual and playing triumph two-fer. A well-appointed clubhouse, on-site pro-shop and expert staff round out its appeal.

Vidanta Golf Riviera Maya

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the 18-hole Vidanta Golf Riviera Maya course includes rolling fairways, pearly white sand traps and views of that ubiquitous deep blue water.
