Winter may not formally begin until December 21st, but in Kohler, Wisconsin, the season’s customary weather often arrives early. By the middle of October, in fact, you might catch sights of salmon running upstream on a pleasantly warm and sun-splashed day; or you could watch as storms cover the landscape with the year’s first blanket of snow.
It should come as no surprise that the region is well-equipped to embrace Old Man Winter whenever he happens to gust into town. Moreover, in recent years, the area’s eponymous, luxury resort has created a collection of complimentary experiences for overnight guests that aim to foster a childlike exuberance for the season’s playgrounds of ice and snow. In fact, those seasonal activities, collectively known as Frozen Fairways, have benefited from a slight upgrade this year.
As avid golfers, we’ll admit it: seeing the dormant fairways and greens at Blackwolf Run crusted with ice or covered in snow is at least somewhat melancholic. Fortunately, there are still shot-making opportunities to be had—they’re just situated in festively decorated curling lounge nearby, one that’s equipped not only with lanes to slide the rock, but with comfortable leather armchairs, a Bloody Mary bar, candy cart, and two “whiskey barrel arcade game consoles,” which feature nostalgic games such as Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Frogger. Nearby, guests can also don skates and glide around an outdoor ice rink, which has grown bigger in the past year.
“We’re building out Blackwolf Run to be a great location all year-round for guests, and over the past four years they’ve really loved these winter activities,” says Jenna Check, Kohler’s associate director of resort events and experiences. “With the name Frozen Fairways, we’re tying these activities back to golf and to what people know us for, but it’s exciting for us to show off the resort and these winter activities. In the evening, you can skate under the lights with all these trees lit up around you.”
Such an idyllic, snow globe-like scene in many ways encapsulates the resort’s allure at any time of the year; however, the winter provides a charm all its own. As part of Frozen Fairways, offered Thursday through Sunday, guests can go cross-country skiing on groomed trails that traverse the River Wildlife property (and connect to a portion of Blackwolf Run’s land); they can go snowshoeing; and there’s even a sledding hill, which golfers might recognize as the 10th fairway of Blackwolf Run’s original course. Carriage rides are offered throughout January and February, beverage tastings grace the calendar each Sunday, and special events such as ice sculpting demos, curling lessons, and chili cook-offs will keep guests warm and entertained all season long.
“This is when the magic happens,” Check says of the trio of months—December, January, and February—when Frozen Fairways will operate. To help guests stave off a chill during these activities, the resort has introduced The Lost Sheep (a new food truck), while a warming hut houses a hot cocoa bar. Winter revelers can also order seasonal cocktails, such as the Sweater Weather—a hot cider cocktail crafted with local maple syrup and Wisconsin-made bourbon—and with a drink in hand, they can adjourn to a nearby patio outfitted with Adirondack chairs and Solo Stoves. (It’s an ideal space for s’mores-making.)
“What we’re trying to capture is a mix of activity and fun and relaxation,” Check explains. “It’s about bring an apres-ski feel to Kohler.”
Best of all, the entire lineup of Frozen Fairways activities and experiences are complimentary for overnight guests, which means those who check into The American Club in December, January, and February will surely be singing, “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!”
