n checking into a hotel, the first request from Kingdom co-founder Arnold Palmer was often to have fresh lemons in his room. Palmer savored the silvery refinement of Ketel One Vodka on the rocks, with a wedge of fresh lemon. Simple as that.

“Arnold called it his ‘tulip’,” says Carl Nolet Jnr., President and CEO of Nolet Spirits USA, distillers of Ketel One. Carl Jnr. started a lasting friendship with Palmer after the golfer’s family asked Ketel One to help Palmer celebrate his 70th birthday in 1999.

“At the time we were creating Ketel One ice bars at special locations,” recalls Carl Jnr. “We built an ice bar for Arnold’s birthday and borrowed some of Arnold’s old clubs and a glove and other items and had them frozen into the ice in this special way, so as not to damage them. Arnold came up to the bar to get his ‘tulip’, looked into the frozen bar and said, ‘Hey, that’s my 9-iron! And that’s my glove! How’d they get in there?’

“That was how our fantastic relationship started. It was genuine. Arnold was not a paid ambassador for Ketel One but he was a great friend.”

The Nolet Distillery dates back to 1691. Carl Jnr. and his brother Bob represent the 11th generation of this iconic family business. In the 1980s the Nolet Family saw a void in the American market for a premium, ultra-smooth vodka to sooth the customarily harsh mouth-feel of a Martini. Nolet crafted Ketel One Vodka, which is named after the distillery’s original copper still from 1864—“Distilleerketel No. 1”—which is still used in production. Nolet uses a column distillation system to produce the finest ‘ultra wheat spirit’, which is then re-distilled in a series of copper pots, before being filtered and blended to ensure Ketel One Vodka’s renowned, silky finish.

“We began distilling Ketel One because we knew we could make the Martini a better cocktail and we have never seen another vodka that comes close to our quality,” says Bob Nolet.

Adds Carl Nolet Jnr.: “We made people realize that vodkas vary and that the smoothness of Ketel One Vodka makes it perfect in a Martini. We love to see people take a taste test. You can put Ketel One up against any other vodka and immediately you can tell the difference.

“Bartenders love our product because they use it to make phenomenal drinks. Ketel One is the canvas and the bartender is the artist.”
