If you’re a golf enthusiast, the name Reynolds Lake Oconee resonates strongly. Covering 11,000 acres, this lakeside residential community is home to seven golf courses, which means you can enjoy a distinctive playing experience every day of the week—and that assumes you’re teeing it up every single day, which is a tall order given everything else this Georgian community can offer. But we’ll talk more on that in a moment.
Boasting a rolodex of architects with names such as Nicklaus, Fazio, Cupp, and Jones, Reynolds’ lineup of golf courses impresses as much for its diversity as for the quality of each course’s conditioning and the distinctive terrain over which those layouts traverse. Reynolds’ latest offering, Richland, is a 7,090-yard gem that seamlessly blends nine brand new holes designed by Fazio with nine of the architect’s existing creations, the latter of which were purposefully renovated and redesigned to reflect Fazio’s modern sensibilities. Across these new golf holes, players will encounter an imposing ravine, a deep valley, aggressively sloped greens, and a handful of strategic doglegs.
“There’s a lot of terrain variation—lots of ups and downs, ins and outs, twists and turns—which is great for golf,” Fazio said at the course’s opening. “That’s what makes this such a fine natural setting. It has character and will never play the same.”
Currently, Richland is enjoying its time in the spotlight, but when it comes to Reynolds’ golfing crown jewel, no one will argue that Great Waters, a Jack Nicklaus design, circa 1992, shines brightest. Set on a point that juts out into the southwestern section of the lake, this Golden Bear signature course introduces 7,400 yards of demanding championship golf. It also benefited from a comprehensive renovation in 2019—one that lowered some fairways by as much as 10 feet to better accommodate views of the lake. All told, half of Great Waters’ holes play right up to, alongside, or—in some cases—over the community’s eponymous body of water.
“It’s one of the really great pieces of property with which I have ever had the experience to work,” Nicklaus says. “The first time I went to Reynolds, I knew we had the potential to have a great golf course. They gave us probably more water than I would’ve ever asked for.”

If you’re looking for an elite practice ground and tour-level equipment fittings, Reynolds has you covered there, too. Spread out across 16 acres, the Kingdom at Reynolds is one of only two TaylorMade-exclusive facilities in the world, and it’s there that professional club fitters and elite instructors will address (and strengthen) any weaknesses in your bag or your game. There’s also an elaborate short game area that can replicate almost any on-course scenario a player might face.
Away from the community’s courses and golf training grounds, recreation takes many other forms at Reynolds Lake Oconee. There are 14 hard and clay tennis courts, for example, as well as 17 pickleball courts, 21 miles of hiking trails, a 20-meter indoor pool, and multiple fitness facilities equipped with state-of-the-art machines and technology. In fact, Reynolds is the first private residential community in the country to install a Technogym circuit training system, where personalized workout programs are delivered across 12 stations without the need for a personal trainer or instructor.
On the eastern side of the lake, opposite the community’s Ritz-Carlton resort (an ideal stay for prospective members yearning to get a taste of what Reynolds Lake Oconee can offer), the Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds delivers outdoor thrills that don’t require a golf club in hand. Whether it’s sporting clays or archery, fishing or off-road driving, the Sporting Grounds’ 100 acres are where Reynolds members come to interact with Mother Nature in fresh and memorable ways. That includes less-expected pursuits, too, such as falconry and an aerial adventure ropes course.
But you can’t forget about the 19,000-acre lake, which is arguably as big a draw—maybe bigger—than Reynolds’ lineup of world-class golf courses. Even avid links-goers, those who initially come to Greensboro, Ga., only for the community’s fairways and greens, are oftentimes converted into at least part-time boaters. Just ask Dave Short, a senior vice president for Reynolds, who moved to the community in 2014. “The golf is what originally caught my eye,” he says, “but I quickly realized after I got here that the lake is a fabulous amenity. The lake offers four-times the shoreline of Georgia’s coast. There’s a private cove out there where you can just float with your family every day if you want it. It’s just awesome.”
Much like the diverse selection of lifestyles that Reynolds supports, the community offers a vast array of residential options—single family homes, cottages, condos, and lots still waiting to be developed. In other words, there’s a home and a neighborhood that can accommodate all tastes and a wide range of budgets.
The community is also conveniently located, making jaunts into the city and journeys to the coast a feasible proposition. After all, Reynolds is 85 miles from downtown Atlanta, 84 miles from Augusta, it’s only an hour’s drive south of Athens, and it’s slightly more than 3 hours away from Savannah.
Still, leaving to go anywhere never seems to rank high on a Reynolds members’ to-do list. That’s not by accident. With a myriad of amenities, events, and pursuits to enjoy, Reynolds residents, whether they live there year-round or only periodically, know the community that they call home offers everything they’re looking for.
“We call Reynolds our escape,” says Mike Whan, CEO of the USGA, who became a member in 2017. “It’s a place where we leave the non-stop activity of our current life and everything slows down a notch.”
