ven though it’s right in the middle of the Hawaiian island chain—and flanked by Maui and Molokai—Lanai has remained the hidden gem of the archipelago. The largely private island has few paved roads, no crowds, just 3,000 residents, and a tranquil, laid-back ambience that recalls the Hawaii of years past.

This peaceful way of living is on full display at the island’s two resorts: Four Seasons Resort Lanai on the coast and the adults-only well-being Sensei Lanai, a Four Seasons Resort in the pine-covered interior. Guests of both resorts can also find a distinctly Lanai experience at the Jack Nicklaus–designed championship Manele Golf Course.

“Golf on Lanai is truly a unique experience,” says Scott Ashworth, director of golf at Four Seasons Resort Lanai. “Manele Golf Course has ascended the rankings to make it a bucket-list golf experience and one you can’t miss if you come to Hawaii. Our goal is to make it one of the best golf experiences you’ve had anywhere in the world.”

Built on lava outcroppings high above the crashing surf of Hulopoe Bay on Lanai’s southern coast, this Jack Nicklaus Signature course features three holes on cliffs where the Pacific Ocean comes into play as a water hazard. Manele’s five-tee concept challenges the best golfers needing precise tee shots over natural gorges and ravines, while novice players will enjoy practicing their swing among a sea of sweeping vistas.

During winter, those views might include breaching whales, especially when playing the 345-yard 13th hole. The dramatic natural setting partly explains why Manele Golf Course is frequently ranked as the top public course in Hawaii, but the layout is far more than just a pretty location.

Manele’s signature hole is the par-3 12th. Measuring at 202 yards, the hole starts from a cliff-top tee box some 150 feet above the ocean. Take a little extra club—and be sure to bring an extra ball—because it’s all carry to reach the green.

The private club–like experience at Manele starts before your first tee shot. Golfers can enjoy complimentary light bites and a Bloody Mary at the pro shop, as well as order unique food and beverage options like the local venison burrito panini, caprese sandwich or a tasty wrap. Tee times are at relaxed, 10-minute intervals, and the course provides complimentary golf club rentals after 12 pm, as well as same-day complimentary replay. The club also offers special programs such as Sensei Lanai’s Take Two experience, where guests enjoy golf and a Tesla car rental or a five-day wellness program tailored to golfers.

Of course, the resorts are about much more than just golf. The seemingly endless land and sea experiences range from archery and shooting at a range in the pine-covered hills near Sensei Lanai to snorkeling, SCUBA, and horseback riding along one of the most dramatic coastlines in the United States. It all adds up to a one-of-a-kind island experience—and a golf destination unlike any other.

“Lanai is a special island destination with what I feel is one of the best golf courses anywhere—and it feels like you have the course to yourself quite often,” Ashworth says. “The views will truly inspire you, and the service you receive will truly make you feel like you are being welcomed with Aloha.”
