For much of the 20th century, American consumers who had an affinity for Scotch typically reached for a bottle of blended whisky. Only in the last two or three decades have single malts risen in prominence on this side of the pond. These days, single malts are incredibly popular, but it might come as a surprise that blended Scotch whisky is still king—79 percent of all Scotch sold in the United States (by volume) is blended. Dewar’s is focused on cultivating a reverence for expertly crafted blended whiskies. Known for its precisely balanced and blended expressions, the long-standing brand (with a history that dates back to 1846) has launched a new global marketing campaign centered on the tagline “Here’s to the Story,” which aims to celebrate the richness of life’s journey while also spotlighting the Dewar’s tradition of exceptional craftsmanship.

The global campaign may be set more in ideals, but the brand’s latest Collector’s Series release, the Double Double 38 Year Old, is all about flavor—and it’s certain to change the minds of those who are lucky enough to taste it. Crafted by six-time Master Blender of the Year Stephanie Macleod, this limited-production whisky showcases the brand’s unique four-stage aging process while also paying homage to multiple regions of Scotch whisky production.

The whisky’s origins began with single malts sourced from Islay and the Highlands, each 38 years old, which were carefully blended together, then aged for another month in those original Highland and Islay casks. (The latter step furthers the efficacy of the blend and is a key aspect of the brand’s proprietary, four-stage aging process.) From there, a portion of the distillery’s Double Double 37 Year Old was added, though it was first allowed to age for an additional year. Finally, the entire assemblage was finished in Pedro Ximénez casks, which previously held Royal Brackla single malt.

The end result is a sophisticated blended whisky that pours a luscious, deep amber color. Wonderfully rich and layered on the nose, the whisky’s aromas of stewed fruits and baking spices belie its blended nature. A prominent raisiny spice note takes center stage at first sip, though it quickly transitions to hints of ginger, with more prominent creamy vanilla and shortbread cookie flavors following thereafter. Relatively light in body—especially considering the luscious sherry influences from the extended finish in Pedro Ximénez casks—the whisky finishes with a faint wisp of smoke and truly drinks like a tour of Scotland.

“With our 38-Year-Old Blended Malt, we are exploring one of the many futures of blended Scotch—a category that is premiumizing and evolving with the times,” says Brian Cox, the vice president of Dewar’s North America. “Our unique four-stage aging process elevates the whisky’s complexity by expanding the depth but also breadth of flavor notes that are traditionally found in Scotch whisky.”

As Cox elaborates, the brand’s new marketing campaign “celebrates the richness of our traditions while inviting whisky lovers to savor and enjoy new moments of discovery,” and there’s certainly plenty to discover while savoring a sip of Dewar’s new Double Double 38 Year Old. Those discoveries aren’t limited to what’s poured in the glass, either.

To enhance enthusiasts’ interactions with this resplendent mature blended whisky, Dewar’s has partnered with Michelin-starred chef Gabriel Kreuther (GK) to create bespoke chocolates that are made not only to pair perfectly with the whisky but also to include some of the whisky itself.

Created by the chef’s head chocolatier, Angela Borah, the chocolates are crafted in two unique flavors. Both include GK’s signature ganache, which is infused with a measure of the Double Double 38 Year Old; however, one features a pearlized black barley almond praline while the other is defined by a winter citrus almond hazelnut praline.

In both cases, the chocolates draw out some of the underlying flavors that make this latest Collector’s Series whisky so complex, and they’re offered as a complimentary gift (via a QR code) for those who purchase a bottle. That purchase represents a sizable investment—375 ml bottles of Dewar’s Double Double 38 Year Old are priced at $2,199—but for those with the means, the whisky delivers on every level.

When you stop to consider that Dewar’s new marketing campaign encourages consumers to “toast to the stories that make life truly fulfilling,” there may be no better whisky to pour for such an occasion.
